If you happen to own any of the mainstream and budget handsets from HTC, then you would require a lot of patience. HTC will definitely be rolling out Android Lollipop updates for your handsets, albeit slowly. According to a report on a Vietnamese website, HTC has plans for rolling out the Lollipop for their devices during the year, but will do it at a snail’s pace.  

HTC has planned to update the HTC One M8 and HTC One M7 in the first month of 2015. HTC One E8, HTC Desire EYE, HTC One M8 EYE and the HTC Butterfly 2 will receive the update in February. March 2015 will see HTC One Max, HTC M7 Dual SIM, HTC Desire 816, HTC One Mini and the HTC Desire 820u getting the Lollipop, while HTC Desire 610, HTC Desire 510 and HTC One Mini will see it only by April-May 2015.

Apple’s most awaited smartwatch, the Apple Watch, was unveiled in September 2015 and is reportedly scheduled to launch in March 2015. However, the CES 2015 at Las Vegas has already witnessed a cheaper Chinese knock-off version of the Apple Watch.

The highly anticipated version of the Apple Watch will see the Chinese knock-off smartwatch selling for almost one-tenth of the price.

                                  

Apple Insider pointed out that the smartwatch is peddled by China's Hyperdon and was sold under the name ‘Smart Watch’. The smartwatch seems to have been designed and put together well in time for the CES and much before Apple goes live with their original product.

The Chinese Smart Watch sports a colour display, an internal speaker, includes a pedometer and an anti-lost mode feature.
German website Bild mentions that the Smart Watch seemed incomplete in features and considered it almost useless as a smartwatch. Even the price of the Chinese smartwatch was not confirmed—while Bild stated they picked one up for $40 (approx Rs 2,400), Mashable had picked one for $27 (approx Rs 1,620).

One of the gadgets hogging the limelight at the CES this year is a charger that can boost your battery to full capacity in less time than it takes to boil a kettle.Developed by Israeli start-up, Storedot, the device is capable of recharging phone batteries about 100 times faster than at present, reported the BBC.

The company had demonstrated a similar feat about eight months ago and involved a battery many times thicker than the handset itself and an outsized charger, making the gadget impractical for real-world use. However, the charging dock showcased in Las Vegas is pretty slim and the phone involved is no bigger than normal too.

It has the potential to revolutionise the way we use mobile phones, tablets, laptops and wearable tech, the report said.

Resech  have developed a bamboo bicycle that can simultaneously recharge mobile devices, smartphone's external battery and a navigation dashboard just by pedalling. The bike transforms the kinetic energy generated by pedalling into a source of electricity. It has the ability to simultaneously recharge mobile devices, smartphone's external battery and a navigation dashboard located on the handlebars, which measures the distance and time, and also has Bluetooth connection.    

The energy transfer is possible thanks to a converter, which is composed of a circuit that starts on the rim, captures the kinetic energy and converts it into electricity, said Cristina Espinosa Lopez, founder of Bambootec consortium from Yucatan state in the south of Mexico. When pedalling, the cyclist produces energy that is transformed into electricity. However, if done irregularly, by either unexpected racing or braking, the load rises and falls;  to solve this problem a regulator was added to the converter to administer the charge evenly.    

In addition to the power converter system, the bicycle has a frame (vertices and edges) assembled with bamboo sticks connected by a special resin. The aim was to replace metal parts for this natural material in order to provide the vehicle with greater resistance (supports 120 kilos), also making it lighter and less prone to heat, said Lopez.    

Once the converter regulates the energy charge, this is transmitted through three channels of power, which are cables with a USB output. One is connected to the navigation screen located on the handlebars of the bicycle, which indicates the number of kilometres and time passed, and provides the option to   establish a connection via Bluetooth to link to a smartphone.    

The other terminal of the power converter recharges any mobile device, while the third one is exclusive to recharge smartphone’s external batteries. The energy generated by the bicycle (over 10 volts) is enough to feed the three tracks simultaneously, Lopez said.

Researchers are testing whether Google Glass can help ease anxiety of parents temporarily separated from their newborns. A new study at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston will test whether the technology of Google Glass, a hands-free, wearable computer device, can help foster the precious bond between a mother and her child.

Hundreds of babies are separated from their mothers after birth each year because one or both of them need immediate care, The Boston Globe reported. Stephanie Shine, a nurse at the hospital, wants those mothers to see their newborns through the eyes of their partners: They will wear Google Glass while visiting the intensive care unit, and the images they see will stream live to a tablet computer in the mom's hands. 

"I want to take this super-high-tech device and capture what could be thought of as one of the strongest and basic human connections there is," said Shine. Researchers are seeking 250 mothers to place in one of three study groups: One group will use Google Glass, another will use iPads to video-chat, and the third, a control group, will not use technology.

Shine believes the use of Glass and iPads could help reduce maternal stress. "For mothers who cannot touch and feel their babies right away, technology can help bridge the gap," said Dr Terrie Inder, chairwoman of newborn medicine at the Brigham.

Flipkart should have a computerised lottery system for Mi 3 sales

Flipkart has been in the news with their recent flash sales regarding the Xiaomi Mi 3 Android smartphones. The three flash sales have not gone down the good books of many fans. Many complained that they could not get their handsets booked during the flash sales. While most complained that they would get errors, some complained that the page never showed any available handset and showed out of stock messages, others complained that Flipkart and Xiaomi are running a scam. Though it may seem like it is a scam, it isn’t.  

Xiaomi is a very well-known smartphone manufacturer in China, and all thanks to the MIUI custom Android operating system that they are respected for. The MIUI operating system is the main reason they have come into the smartphone manufacturing industry. Their main aim is to concentrate on their operating system distribution and the best way is to do it by offering their own smartphone.

Xiaomi entered the Indian market this year and has already taken the smartphone market by a storm by offering a powerful, yet affordable Android smartphone for the masses. They enrolled the online e-commerce giant, Flipkart, for a single point of sales. However, in the first three sales, a whopping 35,000 handsets were reported sold as soon as they opened their counters. The first sale witnessed 10,000 handsets being sold within 38 minutes, while the second and third flash sales witnessed 25,000 handsets vanishing from their inventory within 4 seconds and 2 seconds respectively.

Flipkart has catered to the smartphone brand’s fans in the country, but probably dealt the sale in a wrong manner. There was absolutely no transparency in the sales compared to the inventory. A whopping 3 lakh plus customers registered for the 35,000 handsets, only to have a sour feeling when they did not manage to get through. While those who managed to get one, others were left cribbing, with comments all over the social network and media sites.

Flipkart could have simply placed a strategy for the purchase so that their customers and Xiaomi fans are happy. Possibly a lottery system could have helped. One could register between the said dates, then Flipkart could have had a computerized lottery system, which would pick out ‘X’ number winners depending on the number of handsets for the sale. This list of winners could be put up on their website at a certain time with a link to buy on it. A time frame could be set up so that the customer can go and pay for it. After the time frame passes, if the customer does not claim his handset, the handsets could either be placed for the next sale, or Flipkart could have put up a waiting list for a luckier few. In this way, the deal would have been transparent and all visitors on the site could see that the handsets were distributed systematically.

Flipkart and Xiaomi could also have a pre-ordering scheme, where the customer could pay up a set amount and book the handset. This would create a proper inventory and Xiaomi could just go ahead an import the number of handsets required.

The confusion created due to a non-transparent flash sale will only cause Xiaomi and Flipkart to lose out on customers.

 A top sales executive from Swiss luxury-watch maker Tag Heuer has been hired by Apple in anticipation of its October launch of a smartwatch. Patrick Pruniaux, Tag Heuer's vice president of sales and retail, has reportedly been hired by Apple.

CNBC quoted Jean-Claude Biver, head of watch brands at luxury-goods conglomerate LVMH, which counts Tag Heuer among its subsidiaries, as saying that Apple had signed on Tag Heuer's sales director.
